Q: Is a not-for-profit or charity?

A: No, we are not. While we do believe that some charities are a positive influence, unfortunately many are not. We firmly believe that sustainable long-term economic growth comes to fruition through private for-profit businesses. This is why all commission we earn is invested into loans for viable businesses in the developing world. Some charities certainly do achieve a great deal of good. However we believe that our for-profit model achieves a great deal more than the majority of charities seeking to affect change in the developing world ever can.

Q: If loans 100% of commission received then how do they pay for their business costs?

A: We believe that profit making businesses are a benefit to all of society. This is true for the entrepreneurs we seek to lend to as much as it is for us. Therefore we will ensure our business remains profitable by using a portion of loan repayments for costs such as website maintenance, marketing, staff costs, etc. Given that most similar sites only donate 50% of their income to charity, we believe our model is far superior as it frees up much more funds to be put into loans while allowing us to allocate some repayments towards new loans and some for business costs. Over time we will be able to loan out far more than the revenue we raise due to the extra income of loan repayments

Q: You seem quite anti-charity in your views. Are there any charities or non-profit organisations that you actually support?

A: We believe that free markets, individual rights and free people are the greatest way to reduce poverty and increase prosperity around the world. Unfortunately many charities and organisations waste millions of dollars worth of donations fighting the very things that can alleviate poverty. We are strongly against this waste and misdirection of funds given by well meaning donors.

While we do believe that free and open markets are the sustainable, long-term answer for impoverished communities – at the same time we also know that there are many factors preventing this around the world. Therefore some charity work can be meaningful and helpful if done wisely and in consultation with the local community. It is for this reason that we do strongly support the work of Poverty Cure and would encourage others to donate towards the fantastic work they are doing around the world. They use wisdom to facilitate long-term growth in communities instead of focusing on helping donors feel good while achieving little in the way of real results.
